Wolsingham is a small Dales town in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is ideally located for exploring the North East of England, with Durham City 16 miles away and Newcastle-on- Tyne 21 miles away. There are many tourist attractions within easy driving distance, including three National Parks.

County Durham
County Durham is a fairly recent political invention, but the region has a strong heritage of semi-independance and self-reliance. This was the territory of the Prince Bishops of Durham, medieval church leaders endowed with far-reaching political powers that made them virtual rulers within their bishop's see. Technically, Durham was a "palatinate", or kingdom within a kingdom. In practice the Prince Bishops of Durham were absolute rulers within their teritory. The influence of the bishops gradually lessened after the Middle Ages, and their powers were eventually ceded to the crown.

With the North Pennines to the west and beautiful, unspoilt Heritage Coast in the east, there are plenty of ideas for days out in Durham, ranging from outdoor spectacles like High Force Waterfall and award-winning attractions such as Beamish and The Bowes Museum to historical sites such as the magnificent World Heritage Site Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle and Raby Castle.

Durham City sparkles with cafés, galleries, wonderful hotels and unique, one-off shops, which all offer authentic experiences and hospitality that are unique to County Durham. So whether you would like to trek across the vast moors and valleys of Teesdale and Weardale, or visit majestic castles, living museums, and bustling market towns and villages.

Bishop Auckland
Ancient and historic market town, seat of the Bishop of Durham since the 12th century. The largest town in the Wear Valley, lively, with good shopping and busy markets. Good choice of cafes, pubs and hotels and many leisure facilities.

The French style Town Hall is a Grade I listed building situated in the Market Place. Auckland Castle is located near the Market Place in 800 acres of parkland.
