Local area
Easily accessed from many major routes mean days in the countryside can easily be combined with trips out to local attractions. With so many places to visit within a short drive your stay in Shropshire can be as active or relaxing as you choose. Nearby attractions include Llangollen, Powys and Chirk castles, Pistyll Rhaeadr - the highest waterfall in Wales, Bala and Chester. Chirk is a border town on an escarpment above the Rivers Dee and Ceiriog standing guard over the entrance to the Ceiriog Valley of lush grazing, pastureland, glens and moorland. The castle is open to the public for most of the year.
The vibrant market town of Oswestry offers plenty of interest including good pubs, varied independent shops, historic buildings, restaurants and coffee shops. Snowdonia and the Welsh coast can be reached in about an hour.
Oswestry is an ancient market town in North Shropshire close by the English/Welsh Border. Its strategic position as a 'frontier town' has given it a turbulent history. Today the town serves as a market and shopping centre serving North West Shropshire and Mid Wales. Narrow passageways link streets whose names conjure images of the past:: English Walls, Welsh Walls, The Bailey and the Horsemarket. It is a locally important agricultural centre and retains the intimacy of a rural town with a number of specialist and independent shops.
Oswestry was once encircled by town walls which is shown on the medieval street plan of a walled town. The Oswestry Town Trail leaflet is available from the Heritage Centre and the Tourist Information Centre and can be used to tour the town's many sites of historical interest for example: St Oswald's Church. Cae Glas Park, the town's old gates and Castle Bank are just a few of the places of interest.
Many activities to be enjoyed in the town & nearby include ballooning, art galleries and museums, craft centres, gardens, white water rafting, falconry, rowing & bird watching.
