Sussex A lively mix of city, coast and countryside, Sussex is a great place for a short break, family holiday or day visit. With a huge range of places to stay – quality bed and breakfasts, smart townhouse hotels, deluxe country manors and funky rock star hangouts. If you prefer self-catering, choose from cosy country cottages, stylish apartments and hip beach retreats. Sussex is full of great places to eat, from bustling city bistros and chic canteens to elegant country manors, rustic tearooms, traditional pubs and bright and breezy beach cafés. Explore miles of dramatic and distinctive coastline, from the golden sands of Camber and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs to the inlets of Chichester Harbour, and unspoilt countryside of the High Weald and the rolling South Downs, perfect for exploring. Arundel Arundel is the Historic Heart of the South Downs. Your first view of the town is guaranteed to take your breath away. Dominated by the 11th Century Norman Castle and Roman Catholic Gothic cathedral which sit side-by-side, high on a hillside, Arundel has quaint narrow streets, specialist shops and a good mix of restaurants. Historic and beautiful – that's the best way to describe charming Arundel. Arundel Castle has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk & their ancestors for over 850 years and is well worth a visit. So too is the Cathedral of Our Lady & St Philip Howard - a Victorian Gothic Catholic Cathedral designed by Joseph Hansom who designed the Hansom Cab. Close by is St Nicholas Church and the Fitzalan Chapel. This unique building accommodates a Church of England and a Catholic section. Entrance to the Church of England church is on London Road and the Catholic chapel is accessed through the Castle grounds. Chichester Chichester is the County town and one of the UK's finest smaller Cathedral cities. Its plan and walls date from the Roman occupation and it has splendid examples of late 18th and early 19th century architecture. Chichester Cathedral is Norman, with Gothic additions. It contains a fine piece of Roman mosaic flooring, two impressive stone reliefs from the 12th century showing Christ visiting the house of Mary at Bethany and the raising of Lazarus. The Cathedral has an outstanding collection of 20th century art, including John Piper's tapestry depicting the Holy trinity, Marc Chagall's stained glass window and Graham Sutherland's painting 'Noli Me Tangere'. Chichester District Museum - Is rich in archaeology and local history and at The Guildhall Museum you can see some well preserved medieval frescos. Chichester Festival Theatre - For over thirty years this internationally renowned theatre has been at the forefront of British theatrical life attracting an impressive range of actors and directors. Set in glorious parkland, the complex consists of two auditoria, an elegant restaurant and bars, as well as a private clubroom for its members. The theatre's outstanding summer festival of drama, comedies and musicals with all-star casts runs from May-October and remains in a class of its own. Bognor Regis Consistently making the top three in the sunshine league and beaches boasting a European Blue Flag - Bognor Regis is the place to be for fun family holidays and days out. A fantastic mix of restaurants and outdoor activities will guarantee happy memories at one of the South Coast's premier seaside resorts. Bognor Pier is one of the oldest in Britain. It was originally 305 metres (1,000 ft) long, but has been slowly shrinking! The pavilion end sank in 1965, and a 20 metre mid section was swept away in a 1999 storm. Opposite the Pier is The Steyne, with many Regency buildings listed as of “special interest.” A drinking fountain commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. |
