Norfolk T here are around 45 miles of coastline in Norfolk, with long sandy beaches, crumbling cliffs, flint pebble banks and salt marshes, stretching from Horsey to Holkham beach. The rich architectural heritage of 81 conservation areas, over 2,200 listed buildings and 100 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, is set in countryside ideal for cycling, walking, horse riding, bird watching or just relaxing. Many of the villages in Norfolk are packed with history and several have village trails to help you explore. Experience 12th century life with an audio tour at Castle Rising castle or come to Castle Acre Priory and discover how the monks used to live. Climb up the windmills at Denver, Letheringsett and Great Bircham and watch flour being made – what an amazing view! - or visit Great Cressingham to see the rare wind and water mill. The Norfolk Broads is now the UK’s largest nationally protected wetland and an important area for wildlife. The Broads were formed when people dug for peat in Medieval times and then they were later flooded. The Victorians used them for transporting heavy loads but nowadays they are here purely for pleasure and passengers are the boats’ main cargo. A holiday in the Norfolk Broads is like a whole new world. And it’s easy. No complicated locks to manoeuvre, just 125 miles of navigable waterways with plenty of places for you to moor up and hop out to explore pretty villages and market towns, or to stop at a welcoming pub to set you up for the rest of the day.
Norwich Norwich dates back to Saxon times though there was a major Roman settlement at nearby Caister St Edmund. By 1066 Norwich was one of the largest towns in England and in 1096 work started on the cathedral. The castle which still dominates the city centre was built not long after. The city grew in prosperity and population to become the second city of England by the early sixteenth century. It remained in a position of pre-eminence amongst English provincial towns until the industrial revolution. |
