Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within 1-2 hours car travel from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding. The town is home to a multitude of historically exciting buildings, including the parish church on the river side in Kirkland, a number of houses and office buildings designed and built by renowned local architects, the 14th century Castle Dairy, Kendal Castle and Castle Howe, Abbot Hall Museum, Kendal Museum, a host of churches and chapels and rows of houses built from the 1600’s right through to the present day. Ambleside has been a settlement since pre-Roman times and is largely Victorian. A fort beside Borrans Park - named Galava - was built in Ambleside by the Romans, housing some 500 soldiers. It was built to defend the lower fells of South Lakeland from invasion by the Picts and Scots, and to guard the road to the Roman Port at Ravenglass via Hard Knott Pass. The opening of the Lake Windermere ferry terminal at Waterhead Pier in 1845 created further expansion. Today ferries can be taken to Bowness and Lakeside. Keswick is only a small town but has a range
of shops and services far larger than might be expected. The
friendly attention in the shops and the weekly markets around
the Moot Hall is seen as a pleasant reminder of days gone by.
Keswick is now rapidly becoming known as the" outdoor clothing
capital" of England because of the number of national and local
specialist retailers supplying every need. The visitor also has
the choice of four museums. art and craft galleries, cinema, and
the successful and all year round Theatre by the Lake.
Cockermouth is a beautiful Georgian market town on the edge of the Lake District and home of Wordsworth House. Amidst award winning architecture, a rich local heritage and delightful landscape setting there are a wide variety of activities for visitors. Starting at the west end of Main Street is Wordsworth House, the birthplace of the poet William. .
Ullswater has facilities for all kinds of water sports: sailing, sail-boarding, fishing and cruising, while the surrounding valleys and mountains provide a vast variety of walks from short amble to challenging hill walking. There are also facilities for other healthy outdoor activities such as horse-riding, cycling, mountain-biking, rock-climbing and many more. Windermere, at 12 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, is the largest natural lake in England, and is fed by numerous rivers. The Romans built their fort of Galava at its northern end (Waterhead), and it has always been an important waterway for movement of heavy materials.
