Cornwall – an ancient kingdom – now transformed into one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. This county of contrasts unites old with new. Lush rolling countryside tips over rugged cliff tops down to secluded coves dotted with rock pools. Charming villages cascade down hillsides to tiny ancient fishing harbours bobbing with lobster boats and pleasure crafts. Historic smugglers pubs, quaint thatched dwellings and glorious seascapes abound.

In the extreme south west of England, this once independent territory of Celtic speakers is fiercely proud of its heritage. Archaeological remains from the distant past prove settlement here dates back to the Mesolithic period 1000 years B.C. Standing stones, Celtic crosses, tiny Saxon churches and the fortified settlement atop Carn Brea and on Bodmin Moor speak volumes of an intricate past.

The contrasting north and south coasts meet at Lands End on the western tip of England’s south coast. Along the rugged and rocky north coast are surfing bays and wide beaches. To journey up this edge of the Atlantic shore takes in National Trust heathland, numerous attractive villages and popular surfing venues at St Ives, Newquay – home of annual surfing festival, Padstow – home to many of Rick Stein’s famous enterprises including his Seafood Restaurant – and across the Camel Estuary to Rock, Polzeath and up the north coast to Trebarwith Strand, the legendary castle of King Arthur at Tintagel and on to Bude near the Devon border.

South coast highlights include Penzance, the ancient fishing harbours at Mousehole and Newlyn, Helston, the Lizard Peninsular, Mevagissey, Falmouth’s famous yachting traditions, Fowey, with its Daphne du Maurier associations, Polperro and Looe- an attractive town divided by the Looe River. In between pretty farmland is criss-crossed by narrow, high-hedged lanes waiting to be explore on horseback or by bike.
