| The UK has some of the world's most popular
holiday destinations. The bustle of historic cities, the pleasures
of the seaside, the tranquillity of its wild natural places,
ancient monuments, country houses, castles, fishing rivers,
architecture, spectacular natural wonders ... the UK has something
for everyone. England's ancient cathedral cities, such as
Lincoln, York, Salisbury, Durham and Winchester , cannot be
equalled for sheer physical beauty. Wherever you're based, you're
never more than a few miles from a ruined castle, a majestic
country house, a secluded chapel or a monastery. In the southwest
there are remnants of a Celtic culture that was all but eradicated
elsewhere by the Romans, and everywhere you can find traces of
prehistoric settlers - most famously the megalithic circles of
Stonehenge and Avebury
Considering the temperate nature of the British climate , it's
amazing how much mileage the locals get out of the subject. The
fact is that summers rarely get hot and the winters don't get very
cold, except in the north of Scotland and on the highest points of
the Welsh and Scottish uplands. Rainfall is fairly even, though
again mountainous areas get higher quantities throughout the year.
In general, the south gets more hours of sunshine than the north.
