Local area

All the cottages are in an area of unspoilt beauty near Ballyvaughan with stunning views of Galway Bay, Aran Islands and Connemara Coastline. Fanore is a small village in Co. Clare, Ireland. Situated on the Atlantic Ocean it is renowned for its beautiful sandy beach from which its name is derived (“fainne or” is Gaelic for ring of gold). It has pub, a post office/shop, the Holy Well restaurant and a surf school in close proximity to the beach. Fanore lies on the edge of The Burren - world renowned for its unique flora and fauna.

Shannon airport is one hour to the south, with Galway airport being one hour to the north. All are in close proximity to Doolin, Ballyvaughan, Cliffs of Moher, Burren, Kinvara and Galway City.

Ballyvaughan is a nearby harbour village on the south shores of Galway Bay, in the northwest corner of The Burren, also known as The Gateway to the Burren.

The Burren is an area of great rocky expanse and one of the world's truly unique places. Each year botanists and naturalists roam this lunar landscape in search of Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants that grow in profusion over the limestone pavements. The Burren is renowned for its archaeology. Underneath there are huge caves and rivers that suddenly flood when it rains. The area contains dozens of megalithic tombs and Celtic crosses and a ruined Cistercian Abbey from the 12th century, Corcomroe.

Other local attractions worth a visit are The Doolin Stalactite, The Cliffs of Moher and the Ailwee Caves. Golfers will appreciate the Lahinch Golf Course, one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland with its towering sand dunes, undulating fairways, rolling greens and fair share of blind shots, is the perfect natural golfing terrain.

Trips out might include a ride on the Doolin Ferry to the Aran Islands, or a Cliffs of Moher Cruise. These 200m Cliffs are amongst the highest cliffs in Europe. Their scale and beauty can only be truly appreciated when viewed from sea level. They are located at the south-western edge of The Burren area near Doolin.

Traditional Irish Music is very strong in the Shannon Region and in County Clare in particular, the so-called Home of Irish Traditional Music. Traditional groups play in hundreds of pubs throughout the year, and the festival calendar has a wide range of Fleadhs (music festivals) to choose from.
